Annual DInner 2016

Benjamin Foster, Professor of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations

Please join us in welcoming Professor Foster for dinner on May 4 at the Forest Club for what is certain to be a very interesting and pertinent discourse. Benjamin R. Foster is a professor of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at Yale. Sign up now for an evening of fascinating conversation, fun socializing, and delicious food!

The emergence and expansion of extremism in the Middle East has proven to be a highly challenging and multifaceted issue for world leaders. It has given rise to acts of terrorism across the region and around the world, and it has exacerbated one of the worst refugee crises in modern times. Further, efforts to combat this group have intensified the struggle for supremacy among nations in this region and have re-aggravated the centuries-old sectarian conflict between Sunnis and Shi'ites. This power play, this refugee crisis, and this broader rise of a militant form of Islam are likely to be the defining foreign policy challenge for our generation. Consequently, it is critical to understand the movement's roots and goals, its pretenses within the context of 7th century Islam, and how its fanatical version of the religion differs from more mainstream versions.

The Yale Club of Houston is pleased to invite Benjamin R. Foster to speak on the subject of who these beligerents are and to shed light on what they claim to be, how they managed to emerge as a regional and international threat, and how they reshaped the religious and political landscape of the Middle East
