Information on Professor Amar's Talk:

The Law of the Land: A Grand Tour of our Constitutional Republic

In this talk, based on his just-released book of the same name, Akhil Amar — one of America’s top authorities on the U.S. Constitution, and one of Yale’s most popular teachers — will show us how geography, federalism and regionalism have influenced some of the biggest questions in American constitutional law. How, for example, Abraham Lincoln’s ideas about secession were influenced by his Midwestern upbringing and outlook, and how Justice Anthony Kennedy’s vision reflects his early years in northern California. Closer to home, Professor Amar will also discuss the outsized role that Texas has played in modern constitutional developments involving presidential selection and presidential succession.

Background of Professor Amar: Akhil Amar is Sterling Professor of Law and Political Science at Yale University, where he teaches constitutional law at both Yale College and Yale Law School. He received his B.A in 1980 from Yale College and his J.D. in 1984 from Yale Law School, where he served as an editor of The Yale Law Journal. He clerked for Judge Stephen Breyer on the U.S. Court of Appeals, 1st Circuit and then joined the Yale faculty in 1985. He is a co-editor of the constitutional law casebook, Processes of Constitutional Decisionmaking. He is also the author of several
books, including The Constitution and Criminal Procedure: First PrinciplesThe Bill of Rights: Creation and ReconstructionAmerica’s Constitution: A BiographyAmerica’s Unwritten Constitution: The Precedents and Principles We Live By, and The Law of the Land: A Grand Tour of our Constitutional Republic.
