Prepare High School Students for College: Volunteer with EMERGE Fellowship

Mock Interviews for High-Potential HISD Seniors

Fall is interview season for high school seniors.  This is an intimidating process for many - especially for students from underserved backgrounds who may have had limited prior interview experiences or even limited interaction with college graduates other than their teachers.

Houston Independent School District's EMERGE program supports high-potential high school students on their college journey.  Initially, many believe that a top-tier college is out of reach, given the perceived cost, difficulty of admission and coursework, and the unknowns associated with leaving home.  However, for students with high academic performance, the likelihood of graduating in four years from a top-tier college is much higher than the likelihood of doing so after attending community college or a lower-tier institution.  The financial aid, academic resources, and community support at a top-tier institution enable student success.  HISD's EMERGE program encourages students to consider top-tier opportunities, take challenging AP and IB classes, and pursue extracurricular and leadership opportunities, and also provides application-focused support such as SAT prep, college selection guidance, and application preparation advice.

Last year, 64 high school seniors in the EMERGE program were accepted to top tier colleges across the US - from Pitzer and Stanford, to Rice and UT Austin Honors, to University of Chicago and Carnegie Mellon, to Johns Hopkins and Georgetown, to Amherst and Smith, to Harvard and Yale, and many more.  This year's rising seniors were lucky to be able to spend a week at Yale this summer - experiencing life on a college campus and many other firsts - for many, their first plane ride, tour of a college library, art gallery visit, seminar with a college professor, and more.

This year, we invite Yale Club of Houston members and friends to support EMERGE HISD seniors at their Senior Mock Interview Event.  Volunteers will give mock interviews and provide feedback, preparing students for their college interviews this winter.  Sample interview questions will be provided.
